Rega’s operations center was alerted shortly after noon: Three people out of a group of six fell into a bergschrund between the rock and the glacier at the upper end of the Obertal glacier and were seriously injured, Swiss Air Rescue said.
At the crash site, rescue specialists from Rega, Air-Glaciers and the Swiss Alpine Club established an anchorage in the ice. Thanks to this anchor, a lifeguard was able to safely rappel down the fallen and the injured could be rescued one after another from the crevasse.
The wounded man was airlifted to hospital.
In the rescue winch, the injured were airlifted from the glacier to an intermediate landing site on a nearby mountain lake, where they were treated medically and transferred to the rescue helicopter.
Finally, the three patients were able to be transferred in the three rescue helicopters to the nearest suitable hospitals. (szm)
