  • Marlen Reusser takes silver in the time trial of the Imola World Cup.
  • The 28-year-old Bernese has only to admit defeat to Dutch Anna van der Breggen.
  • The race was overshadowed by the fall of defending champion Chloé Dygert, who fell over a railing with the fastest time.

Marlen Reusser celebrated the greatest success of her career at Imola. Just a month after winning his first European Championship medal (bronze), the Bern-based time trial specialist now hit the bigger stage.

Only Anna van der Breggen was faster than Reusser at Imola. The European champion from the Netherlands, who won the Giro Rosa last week, secured the long-awaited title after winning 4 silver medals at the World Cup.

Defending champion Chloé Dygert was unable to intervene in the battle for the medals. The American probably would have had something to say about the title. With the best time he lost control in a right turn and crashed into a railing. There is no information yet on Dygert’s health.

Reusser mid-race ahead of Van der Breggen

On the 31.7-kilometer route starting and finishing at the Autodromo Enzo e Dino Ferrari, Reusser kept pace with the fastest from the start. Midway through the race he was 26 seconds behind Dygert, but 8 seconds ahead of eventual winner Van der Breggen.

In the second half of the route, the Dutchman, who had been one of the absolute top favorites, was able to win. Reusser finally finished 15 seconds behind Van der Breggen. His compatriot Ellen van Dijk, who finished third, lost a good 31 seconds with the best time of the day (40: 20,14 minutes).

Reusser is the first Swiss medalist at a World Cup since Karin Thürig in 2006. The Lucerne woman also won silver in Salzburg 14 years ago.
