Republicans File Against Biden’s Son: “Troubled” Conflicts of Interest
About six weeks before the US elections, Republicans are again trying to attack Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden for his son’s previous activity in Ukraine.
Hunter Biden’s membership on the Burisma gas company’s board of directors between 2014 and 2019 has long been the cause of allegations among Republicans against Biden, who was vice president of the United States under Barack Obama until 2017.
In a report released Wednesday by two US Senate committees, Republicans now write that two Obama administration officials appeared to have problems with Hunter Biden’s job due to a possible conflict of interest.
The vice president’s office and State Department officials knew of these concerns but ignored them, Republicans write. On the other hand, it is unclear to what extent Hunter Biden’s role in Burisma has influenced US policy toward Ukraine.
The 87-page report also includes Hunter Biden’s financial transactions, which Senator Ron Johnson described as “questionable” on Twitter, as well as the travels of the former vice president’s son under Secret Service protection.
Conflict between rivals
US President Donald Trump has repeatedly accused Biden of using his office to try to protect his son from the Ukrainian judiciary. Trump wanted to get investigations in Ukraine. The conflict eventually sparked an impeachment process against Trump, which ended in February with an acquittal in the Senate.
Trump’s defense attorneys argued at the time that Hunter Biden’s role on Burisma’s board of directors was a clear conflict of interest. At the time, Biden was in charge of US policy toward Ukraine.
Democrats had harshly criticized Republican investigations in the Senate, accusing them, among other things, of wasting valuable time and tax money in the crown pandemic to harm the president’s political opponents. (sda / dpa)
