Uncertainty among Basel residents is high shortly before the autumn break: travel is difficult during the pandemic. Many countries are on the federal hazard list. In addition to quarantine after returning from vacation, there is still a risk of possible infection abroad.
However, the Basel canton doctor Thomas Steffen generally does not advise against travel. But: “What makes holidays difficult for you is that the situation changes almost daily. That is why we can only recommend that you inform yourself well about the situation and what the consequences would be if you were subsequently quarantined ”, says Steffen in an interview with Telebasel.
Recommended region vacations
The canton doctor recommends not traveling far. “I would rather stay in the region because at the moment it is a bit difficult with the holidays.” It is difficult to estimate how the situation will develop.
This means the change in the epidemiological situation in Europe. The list of countries and areas at risk is constantly reviewed by the Federal Office of Public Health. There is also a lot to do with the cantonal authorities. “Depending on the destination, we notice that there is a lot of demand. When Vienna and Paris appeared on the list, it immediately triggered a wave of inquiries within a few minutes. “
Thomas Steffen says that he himself does not have fall holidays. He goes on to say that he will be spending his days off in Switzerland in the coming weeks. In the summer, he decided to vacation in Germany due to the corona pandemic. “In doing so, I discovered: Switzerland is always great.”
What if Switzerland is also considered a risk country elsewhere?
There is also a risk when booking: holiday destinations may decide to order a quarantine for the Swiss, this was ordered by Cyprus on Tuesday. A negative corona test is also of no use: if you want to go to Cyprus, you must be quarantined there for two weeks.
With the growing number, it is conceivable that other countries will decide to take this step as well. As reported by “Blick”, Hotelplan, Tui and Kuoni are not currently assuming that other countries will take this step. Meanwhile, travelers to Cyprus have the option of rebooking their holidays in another destination or getting their money back at travel agencies.
The authorities want to stay alert
It’s still in the stars if the numbers will rise again after fall break. “Usually the summer break triggers the big wave because everyone is going somewhere here and you can feel that,” explains Thomas Steffen. “We will have to watch him closely. Of course, there is also the winter wave and there may be colds and at some point the flu arrives. It is conceivable that the numbers will increase. We have to be vigilant. “
In addition, the big events will be relaxed starting on October 1. When asked if this is perhaps premature, the canton doctor says: “Since the opening, there has actually been a constant search for balance between: How much freedom can we allow again and what does it mean? Speaking for Basel, we are currently well-positioned enough to take this step. We will have to be close to whether it goes well or we will have to react. “
