The Eiffel Tower in Paris was evacuated Wednesday for about two hours due to a bomb threat. There was an anonymous call to the police, said the operator of the famous attraction.
At around 12:15 p.m., the 300-meter-high landmark in the center of the French capital was completely cleared. At 2:15 pm the tower reopened to visitors.
Police can’t find anything
The Paris police had confirmed a police operation due to a bomb threat to the DPA news agency. Therefore, the mission ended in the afternoon with nothing found. The area around the Eiffel Tower had previously been closed to traffic as a precaution.
The tower, which is over 130 years old, has been visited by around seven million people each year. During the corona pandemic, however, strict hygiene rules apply: the daily number of visitors is limited.
The tower only reopened in late June after a forced three-month break. The “dame de fer” (iron lady), as the monument is affectionately known in France, was built for the World’s Fair in Paris and completed in 1889.
