Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo won’t be Europe’s Footballer of the Year this year either. The big favorite wears the Bayern jersey this year.
For the last two years, the two superstars of world football, Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, have missed the elections for European Footballer of the Year. The crown was snatched from Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk in 2019. The previous year he had beaten Luka Modric of Croatia. Now the Dutchman has to give up the title again, because van Dijk is not one of the last three nominees alongside Messi and Ronaldo.
In 2020 these will be Kevin de Bruyne, Manuel Neuer and Robert Lewandowski. The latter is the big favorite. The Polish forward scored a sensational 3-pointer for Bayern last season with 55 goals in 47 competitive matches. The award will be awarded next week as part of the Champions League group draw.
Bayern will also have a say in the coach of the year. In addition to Hansi Flick, Jürgen Klopp from Liverpool and Julian Nagelsmann from RB Leipzig are also nominated.
ManCity defender Lucy Bronze (England), Chelsea forward Pernille Harder (Denmark) and Lyon defender Wendie Renard (France) will vote for the best footballer in Europe.
