The United States counts about 200,000 deaths
It’s an almost incomprehensible amount of suffering and pain: In the United States, about 200,000 people have now died after being infected with the coronavirus. That corresponds to a great extinct city. More recently, about 40,000 new confirmed infections were reported each day. According to experts, this number should be lowered below 10,000 to control it. Donald Trump seems to rely primarily on a corona vaccination in the final push for the presidential election campaign. Almost every day, he promises that the vaccine will be available soon. Critics accuse the president of failure.
Rapid rise in new infections in India
India ranks second in the world for corona infections – more than 5.4 million cases have been confirmed so far. Calculated in absolute numbers, known new infections in the South Asian nation have risen faster than in any other country for weeks. On Tuesday, about 75,000 cases were added compared to the previous day. However, the government is easing its crown measures to get the economy working again. Due to what was once a strict lockdown, the country’s economic output plummeted, millions of people lost their jobs, and many feared starvation. Also, there are no regular international flights or tourist visas. Most schools, cinemas and museums will also be closed.
Brazil is taking a lax approach to the pandemic
The beginning of spring does not necessarily make it easier for people in Brazil to consistently comply with the crown measurements. When there was a long weekend in early September on the occasion of Independence Day and the temperatures had already risen, many used it to travel or fill the famous beaches, restaurants and bars of the metropolis of Rio de Janeiro. For weeks, the largest and most populous country in Latin America has stabilized at more than 40,000 new infections and more than 1,000 deaths in a 24-hour period. The actual numbers are likely to be much higher, also because the country performs so little testing. President Jair Bolsonaro, who, like other family members, caught the Corona himself, has long been criticized internationally for his lax handling of the pandemic.
Russia ranks fourth on the list of cases
In Russia, currently number four on the world list of case numbers, the numbers are rising again. At the beginning of the week there were almost 6,200 new cases. Since the beginning of the pandemic, more than 1.1 million people have been infected in this huge country. The capital, Moscow, in particular, remains a hotspot. The authorities have relaxed so far. No further protection measures are needed or required, said Anna Popova, director of consumer protection agency Rospotrebnadzor on Monday. The Russian leadership also awaits its Sputnik V miracle weapon in the fight against Corona – the vaccine was released to the media in the summer. However, for the important phase III of the study, only a few hundred people have been vaccinated so far.
Mexicans go to work but not to the doctor
Mexico, the tenth most populous country in the world with just under 130 million inhabitants, has so far registered the fourth highest number of deaths related to the coronavirus. According to official figures, the infection curve is gradually falling, but hundreds of deaths are still being added every day. Fearing poorly equipped clinics, many ailing Mexicans cannot receive treatment until it is too late. There were never binding exit restrictions. Many stores, restaurants, as well as cinemas and gyms can now reopen on a limited basis. Furthermore, more than half of the workers in Mexico work in the informal sector, they cannot afford to stay at home.
Second confinement in Israel
In Israel, the government has reacted to the latest record levels with a drastic step: a second nationwide lockdown has been in effect since Friday. People have to accept restrictions such as school closings and restrictions on freedom of movement. The number of new infections rose to more than 5,500 on September 15 and was just 5 on May 23. On Tuesday night, the government also decided to award more aid worth billions to businesses and employees.
Britain: the test system on the brink of collapse
London is also on alert: in recent days, 3,500 to 4,000 new cases of corona have been added almost daily in Britain, the number of infections roughly doubling in seven days. If the virus continues to spread unhindered at the same rate, the UK could count nearly 50,000 cases a day by mid-October, leading health experts warned. The test system is on the verge of collapse, in many places there are currently hardly any corona tests available. The government recommends that its citizens return to work from home. As of Thursday, pubs and restaurants in England should also close by 10pm at the latest.
Spain in Western Europe most affected
With more than 640,000 infections and more than 30,000 deaths, Spain is the western European country most affected by the pandemic. The worst is the situation in the capital: the Madrid metropolitan area has been responsible for more than a third of all new infections for weeks. Numerous areas in and around the capital were effectively cordoned off on Monday: you are now only allowed to enter or leave them for urgent matters, for example to go to work, school or the doctor. Parks and playgrounds have also been closed. Similar measures exist in many other parts of the country, including Mallorca.
More than 10,000 new infections in France every day
The number of new corona infections has also increased in France for weeks. The 10,000 daily mark has already been broken. The French government is now fighting the virus mainly with regional measures. Cities that were particularly affected, such as Marseille and Nice, have introduced stricter measures. This particularly applies to bans on certain celebrations or restrictions on the purchase and consumption of alcohol in public. In France, it is generally mandatory to wear a mask in shops and public transport, as well as at work. In many cities, including Paris, the mask is also mandatory outdoors.
Italy survived the worst
The relatively good news comes from Italy, however: the Mediterranean country, which was hit particularly hard by the pandemic in the spring, is no longer one of the absolute hotspots in the crown with the current infection rate. According to the Health Ministry, the numbers have risen continuously for the past seven weeks on average, but Italy is still a long way from the March 21 high with 6,557 people infected in 24 hours. Strict hygiene and distance regulations continue to be applied throughout the country. (SDA)
