Basel fans launch an uprising against Bernhard Burgener – that’s behind
At the weekend, FC Basel started the Super League season with a disappointing result. Against the recently promoted Vaduz, FCB did not get more than 2-2.
And there are still rumors in the area: under the name “Yystoo for e FCB”, some fans want to oppose President Bernhard Burgener. What’s behind? We provide the most important answers.
More about the first day of the Super League:
What is the background of the action?
The founders of “Yystoo für e FCB” are unhappy with the current management of the club. The organizers write that there is concern about developments under Bernhard Burgener. That is why discussions took place throughout the year and the group was formed in the summer. This is also necessary because previous actions, such as the Muttenzer curve, did not have the desired consequences.
Who is behind the campaign?
FC Basel fans are behind “Yystoo for e FCB”. “A mixed crowd from all sectors of the stadium,” explains co-initiator David Frey. Members of the group include representatives of fan clubs and Muttenzerkurve. Together they reach about 20 people. Some of them are also members of FC Basel.
In addition to the organizers, some well-known people have already spoken in favor of the action as first signatories. These include, for example, National Councilor Elisabeth Schneider-Schneiter (CVP), State Councilor Eva Herzog (SP) and other Basel personalities known from culture, business and politics. For his part, former FCB coach Thorsten Fink has withdrawn from the protest group. It is said that he did not read all the information that was sent to him.

What does “Yystoo for e FCB” expect?
First of all, it’s about giving the fans a concerned voice; there are some of them, says David Frey: “We have noticed that many have a need.” The interests of the different fan representatives will join “Yystoo for e FCB”. One concern is, for example, that Bernhard Burgener should not be president of the club and the FCB-Aktiengesellschaft at the same time. The group expects an independent board of directors that can take on a control role.
Will they buy Bernhard Burgener?
No, hardly. The organizers simply lack the financial means. “If you can get people with more resources to do something with this campaign, of course it would be even better,” says David Frey. However, this is not the main objective. Therefore, it is about intervening specifically through the club.
Which are the next steps?
The initiators still leave open how “Yystoo for e FCB” will proceed. That depends on the reactions to the launch. The next important date is the General Assembly next October. So the group hopes that, at best, an independent association board will be elected.
