Misano: Viñales wins, drama for VR46 troupe

After the rain in the Moto2 class brought the race to a halt and a second delay before the restart, the sun shone again on the “Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli” before the MotoGP start at 14:00 hours. At nearly 26 degrees on the Adriatic coast, the asphalt temperature was 34 degrees.

For the second time in a row, Yamaha’s factory rider Maverick Viñales was in pole position, but in the last nine attempts he never turned this starting point into a victory. Also, the last pole winner was at Misano in 2010, when it was Dani Pedrosa.

The front row of the grid was completed by Pramac Ducati rider Jack Miller, who suffered a bad crash in warm-up, and Fabio Quartararo, who was just six points behind Andrea Dovizioso in the championship standings. The world championship leader only started from position 10.

While Valentino Rossi’s home GP had already ended on lap two, Francesco “Pecco” Bagnaia gave Italian fans hope of 20 laps. In the end, however, Viñales celebrated his first win of the season.

Dovizioso’s eighth place ensured that the top of the World Cup table got even closer – the top 4 are only four points apart.

This was the seventh MotoGP race of the 2020 season:

Start: Jack Miller leads from second on the grid, followed by Viñales, Quartararo, Bagnaia, Pol Espargaró and Rossi.

First round: Viñales immediately passes to Miller, Bagnaia attacks Quartararo, but only the second attack is successful. Aleix Espargaró falls, Morbidelli becomes involved in the incident and stays behind.

Lap 2: Rossi crashes at Turn 4! Although it continues, the dream of the 200th podium in the premier class at the home GP is over.

Binder gets Miller and is the new third behind Bagnaia and Viñales. Miller then goes away and also lets Pol Espargaró and Quartararo pass. Binder supports at turn 14!

Round 3: Viñales leads Bagnaia 0.7 seconds, who has a 1.2 second credit over Pol Espargaró. The KTM rider drives the new fastest lap in the race.

Round 4: Bagnaia closes in on the leader, while World Championship leader Dovizioso is only 11. Binder falls for the second time at Turn 1.

Round 5: I, who ranked sixth from Petrucci, go hunting for Miller. However, against the Australian, there is already a difference of more than 2 seconds with Quartararo, fourth classified. Rookies Lecuona and Alex Márquez also outperform Petrucci.

Lap 6: Bagnaia is on the rear wheel of Viñales. The Yamaha rider leaves the door open at Turn 4 and the Pramac rider has passed. Pol Espargaró follows the pair a second behind.

Lap 7: Bagnaia leaves. KTM rookie Lecuona was sixth behind.

Lap 8: I am in fifth place, three seconds behind Quartararo (4th). Miller enters the pits, the engine of his Pramac-Ducati caused problems.

Round 9: Viñales catches up again, is 0.7 seconds behind Pecco.

Round 10: Dovizioso is ninth and targets Alex Marquez, who previously had to let Oliveira go.

Lap 11: Bagnaia extends his lead to more than a second.

Round 12: The differences remain constant: Pol Espargaró leads around 1.5 seconds behind Viñales and has a second credit in Quartararo. Fifth, I am 2.4 seconds behind the man in front.

Matchday 13: With this stand Quartararo and Dovizioso would be tied with 83 points each. Tito Rabat falls.

Matchday 14: Oliveira grabs his teammate Lecuona and places himself 6.

Lap 15: Pol Espargaró loses to Viñales, but Quartararo is 1.2 seconds behind the official Red Bull KTM rider.

Lap 16: Rossi finally gives up and enters the pits, leaving only 15 drivers on the track.

Lap 17: Mir (5th) cannot reduce the difference with Quartararo to less than two seconds.

Round 18: Viñales does not give up, the difference is 1.3 seconds.

Lap 19: Quartararo gets closer to Pol Espargaró, who had decided on the soft rear tire on short notice.

Round 20: Dovizioso loses ninth place to Nakagami.

Lap 21: Drama for Bagnaia, crash at Turn 6 for over a second!

Round 22: The new leader Viñales has a cushion of more than 4 seconds on Pol Espargaró and Quartararo. The French receive a “runway limit warning”.

Lap 23: I have the podium positions in sight, he is only half a second behind Quartararo, who is behind Pol.

Round 24: Quartararo can’t figure out how to avoid it, it’s my turn.

Round 25: Quartararo grabs me. Lecuona crashes at turn 16.

Round 26: passing Pol Espargaró in turn 1, Quartararo also grabs the KTM rider. But Petronas’ man gets a long lap penalty!

Last lap: Viñales is heading safely to his first win of the season. I landed in second place, Quartararo crossed the finish line in third place because he did not shoot the penalty but a 3 second penalty was added. So Pol Espargaró is on the podium.
