(mg) Benjamin Giezendanner (SVP / AG) speaks of an “immediate stop of the march” in a postulate that has just been presented. Calls on the Federal Council to tighten SBB’s emergency brake when it comes to the planned expansion of night train services. What bothers him is, among other things, that SBB is supposed to receive money from the climate fund for this “deficit expansion” (Giezendanner). “Does the distortion of the market caused by the promotion of night train connections not go against other subsidies and aid to the development of the public sector?” He asks in the postulate.
It is now being seconded by various actors from travel companies. “SBB’s plan is devastating for the coach industry,” says André Kirchhofer, managing director of the Astag commercial vehicle association, from “SonntagsZeitung”. Philip Kristensen, Managing Director of Aerosuisse, the Swiss aviation coordinating organization, also adds: “The subsidy for the planned sleeper supply leads to an unacceptable distortion of competition in the aviation industry and other private transport companies.” .
SBB and its Austrian partner ÖBB want to expand the range of night train services from six to ten lines. Among other things, new night trains are planned from Switzerland to Amsterdam, Rome and Barcelona. This planned expansion can only be guaranteed with financial support from the Swiss Climate Fund, says SBB. “Night trains have a clearly demonstrable impact on climate, as they change travel from plane, car or bus to train,” writes SBB.
