  • At the start of the new Super League season, Lugano beat Lucerna 2-1 at home.
  • Alexander Gerndt (20th) and Mattia Bottani (32nd) score both goals for Lugano.
  • Lucerna only fared better after the red card to Christopher Lungoyi (69) and scored a late consolation goal from Miroslav Covilo (92).
  • In the second game of the night, YB defeated FCZ 2-1.

I would have, I would have, if … some people from FC Luzern may ask that after the first game of the season in Lugano. Because in Ticino the “lights” were initially awarded a penalty at 13 minutes and after an intervention by Lugano goalkeeper Sebastian Osigwe on Ibrahima Ndiaye. But referee Sandro Schärer made the decision after VAR consultation and diverted the FCL.

Gerndt and Bottani decide the game

Because from now on the central Swiss hardly had significant chances, while Lugano scored accountants on the other side:

  • 20. Minute: Alexander Gerndt is not attacked by the Lucerne defense and retreats from a long distance. FCL substitute goalkeeper David Zibung (regular goalkeeper Marius Müller was absent due to the upcoming birth of his son) is not looking good (see video above).
  • 32. Minute: After a good play, Mattia Bottani scores from close range to make it 2-0.

With that the preliminary decision had been made, or so it seemed. But after a hard tackle from Christopher Lungoyi (69), who had just been substituted, the 20-year-old saw red. Lucerne rose again, but was barely able to create dangerous opportunities.

The best deactivated Osigwe, who represented the injured Noam Baumann well. The 26-year-old fired Silvan Sidler’s long-range shot into the post in his Super League debut. Only in the second of the 3 minutes of stoppage did a ball land in Lugano’s goal; Miroslav Covilo had bad luck heading into his own goal.

Lugano will continue with an away game against FC Zurich next weekend. Lucerne must score at home against newly promoted Lausanne.
