Marc Hirschi has been voted the most combative rider of the Tour de France, which ends tomorrow, by the organizers. The young man from Bern won this prestigious award as the second Swiss citizen after Serge Demierre in 1983. Hirschi received a cash prize of 25,000 euros for it.

The 22-year-old from the Sunweb team became one of the discoveries of the Tour de France and also garnered international attention. Hirschi celebrated his first professional victory as the highlight of Stage 12 at Sarran.

The 2018 U23 world champion also repeatedly advanced in escape groups and qualified on the podium two more times. In stage 18, when Hirschi was trying to get the King of the Mountain jersey, a crash on a downhill prevented another top ranking.

The so-called “Super Combative” is chosen by a four-person jury headed by race director Thierry Gouvenou. Also available were the French Pierre Rolland and Julian Alaphilippe, as well as the Ecuadorian Richard Carapaz, the German Lennard Kämna and the American Neilson Powless. The award has been awarded since 1956. Hirschi replaces Alaphilippe as the most aggressive driver on the tour. (ram / sda)
