Europe is becoming a cause for concern. Corona cases on the continent are increasing dramatically. “We are facing a very serious situation,” Hans Kluge, WHO’s regional director for Europe, warned on Thursday. “The number of weekly cases has now exceeded the number of cases reported when the pandemic peaked in March.”
More than half of European countries have reported an increase in new infections of more than 10 percent in the last two weeks. In seven of these countries, the number of new reported cases more than doubled during the same period. It is particularly bad for children with long-term problems in Spain, France and Britain.
Mild Flu Season: Fewer Corona Deaths?
The Swedes are doing better. In the only country in Europe without a blockade, new infections are declining. However, Sweden ranks at the Italian level (591 / million) with 575 deaths per million inhabitants and lags far behind its Nordic neighbors Finland (62 / million) and Norway (49 / million).
Anders Tegnell, architect of the Swedish Sonderweg, justifies it with the mild flu season. “Countries like Sweden, which had a relatively low death rate from influenza in the last two or three years, have a very high death rate from Covid-19,” says the state epidemiologist. In plain English: if the flu has already killed the elderly and the weak, the coronavirus does less harm. The Swedish media have verified Tegnell’s claim and have refuted: neighboring countries also had few deaths from influenza.
