The Lightning decide the semifinal series against the New York Islanders thanks to a 2-1 nV 4-2 victory for themselves.
Two days earlier, the Islanders had been able to avoid premature elimination with the winning goal in 2nd overtime. In Game 6 of the Best-of-7 series, Tampa Bay was the happiest team in overtime.
Canadian center Anthony Cirelli made the decision at 13 minutes and 18 seconds. His shot off the post danced across the line before finding its way into the goal via goalkeeper Semyon Varlamov’s skid.
The first two goals came in the first third. Cirelli’s compatriot Devon Toews gave the Islanders the lead, while Swede Victor Hedman tied for the Lightning.
Title No. 2 after 16 years?
Tampa Bay, which qualified for the first time in 5 years for the Stanley Cup final, will meet the Dallas Stars from Sunday night in the final series. The Lightning won the only title so far 16 years ago.
Dallas also won the trophy once, 21 years ago. In the following season, in their second and final participation, the Stars were submitted to the New Jersey Devils.
