Do you design the garden the way you want? It will soon stop working in some communities. The fight against rock gardens is currently advertised throughout Switzerland. Whether in St. Gallen, Steffisburg BE or Grenchen SW: More and more communities are resolving bans on rock gardens, according to the Aargauer Zeitung.

But why should politics interfere with private gardens? After all, a gravel garden has supposed advantages: in a garden that is gray instead of green, there is no weeding or green maintenance. They are considered to be easy to care for. Not surprising, as they are made mostly of stones.

Disadvantages of gravel gardens.

But rock gardens store the heat of summer and can reach temperatures of up to 70 degrees. Also, fewer animals can live in gravel areas than in a green garden. Gravel gardens reduce the habitat of plants and animals in Switzerland. Additionally, gray gardens disrupt the natural water cycle. Because rainwater cannot be stored or evaporated in a rock garden.

The Langendorf SO community is now banning. At a community meeting in late August it was decided that “rock gardens that have no ecological benefit” will be banned in the future. Mayor Hans-Peter Berger gives the newspaper the warming of surfaces in summer and the reduction of biodiversity as reasons for the decision.

Gravel gardens are also controversial in neighboring countries. In Germany, individual federal states now decide for or against rock gardens. The establishment of a gray garden is prohibited according to the State Law of Conservation of Nature. (euc)
