For safety reasons, parking spaces will be reserved where the distance between the parking lot and the tram track is only one meter or less, as announced on Friday by the Basel Department of Construction and Transport (BVD).
In a first step, 180 parking spaces are allocated on the following streets: Allschwilerstrasse, Austrasse, Bruderholzstrasse, Hammerstrasse, Leonhardsgraben, Totentanz and Zeughausstrasse. A publication of the project is planned for the next few days in the canton bulletin. The implementation of the first package should take place this year.
With this measure, the BVD wants to increase the safety of cyclists. Because where cars can park within walking distance of the tram tracks, dangerous situations for cyclists and accidents occur again and again, according to the statement. Cyclists were often in danger.
A total of 27,000 parking spaces on the street
Such confined space conditions would not correspond to the applicable national regulations or the goals of the governing council, according to which all roads that are open to bicycle traffic must be safe.
Furthermore, with this measure, tram traffic would be less hampered by parked cars. According to BVD, it often happens that a tram slows down because a car is parked.
In the coming years and in a second package, another 350 parking spaces will be canceled. Specifically, those parking spaces that do not comply with the applicable regulations will be eliminated, even if the distance between parked cars and the tram tracks is greater than one meter.
As the responsible project manager at the BVD of the Keystone-SDA news agency said, the parking spaces at Thiersteinerallee, Neubadstrasse, Adlerstrasse, Neuweilerstrasse and Allschwilerstrasse are affected by a cancellation.
The BVD also plans to mark bike lanes on streets where parking spaces are reserved and where Tempo 50 applies.
According to the BVD, there are a total of 27,000 street parking spaces in Basel-Stadt.
