The taking of three dead in Zurich was definitely a relationship crime

The investigation into the taking of hostages with three deaths in Zurich in May 2019 has been completed. According to the Public Ministry and the Cantonal Police, it was definitely a crime of relationship and homicide.

The involvement of a third person in violent crime can be excluded, as the Zurich Prosecutor announced on Thursday. Once the investigation was completed and because the aggressor is dead, the prosecution closed the case in early September.

A 60-year-old man had taken two women hostage in an apartment on Döltschiweg in the city of Zurich in the early morning of May 31, 2019. Over the course of the three-hour hostage-taking, the man first shot the tenant 38 years old and then her 34-year-old ex-partner. He finally judged himself.

All three people lived in the canton of Zurich. The attacker and his ex-partner were Swiss, a tenant from the Czech Republic.

The police arrived very early with a large contingent during the hostage-taking and cordoned off the area around the residential building on Döltschiweg in District 3. The kidnapper initially threatened to shoot the women if the police did not retreat.

The man admitted to giving up and was still shot

During negotiations with the police, the man later declared that he wanted to stop his action and surrender. A little later, however, several shots were fired in the apartment, after which she was assaulted by Scorpio’s intervention unit. Police met with three seriously injured people who died at the scene despite attempts to resuscitate them.

Police did not raid the apartment earlier because the man wanted to surrender, city police spokesman Marco Cortesi said at the time. One did not have to assume that he would perform such an act. (aeg / sda)
