A medicane is a Mediterranean cyclone with characteristics of a tropical storm. It has a lot in common with a hurricane: it can bring dangerous gusts of wind, meter-high waves and torrential rain. As with a hurricane, a cloudless eye can be seen in satellite images.

However, there are also differences with tropical cyclones in terms of formation, extent, duration and intensity. A strong drug can reach level 1 on the five-point hurricane scale.

“Ianos” heads to Greece

Already on Thursday the Medicane will cause storm gusts and hurricanes, large amounts of rain and high waves in the Ionian Sea. It is expected to face western Greece early Friday morning. In addition to storms, there is also the threat of torrential rains with 200 to 400 mm in some places until Saturday. The Greek weather service also warns about the risk of tornadoes.
