The canton of Vaud replied. He had to. The strictest measures of the Crown in the country will apply from this afternoon: the requirement of the mask will be extended from stores to all public buildings such as cinemas, libraries, museums and government offices. Nightclubs have to close again, events with more than 100 people are prohibited.
The canton recorded by far the most new corona infections in the past two weeks. One in three tests with a positive result currently comes from Vaud. The positive rate of the tests is a surprisingly high 6.5 percent.
The consequence of the dizzying number of cases: hospitals are increasingly overloaded. “They are almost full,” Health Director Rebecca Ruiz (38) told VIEW this week. Not because of Corona, but because, in contrast to the extraordinary spring situation, normal operation is working. “If there are many infections that lead to hospitalizations, we can become overwhelmed very quickly,” he warns.
What is worrying is that the number of older people who have become seriously ill has increased. “Compared to the previous month, there are more and more people over 65 among those hospitalized,” says Ruiz. 33 Corona patients were in a Vaudois hospital on Sunday, 23 of them are over 65 years old. Nine people died in nursing homes in August.
