After the devastating fire in the Moria refugee camp on Lesbos, there is a growing demand in European countries to accept migrants. Only Germany wants to take in about 1,700 of the 12,500 residents of the camp who have lost their last belongings. Switzerland has agreed to accept 20 children and adolescents and has local help.
For some Swiss cities, that is not enough. Basel, Bern, Zurich, Lucerne, Winterthur ZH, Geneva, Lausanne VD and St. Gallen are calling on the federal government to “do more.” The help offered by the city of Bern, which wants to welcome 20 immigrants directly, is very specific.
Greece locks
But it is questionable whether such actions can be carried out. Because Greece of all places of arrival, which should have an interest in the departure of many immigrants, is being blocked. After Greek authorities have identified and arrested five Afghan asylum seekers as suspected arsonists, they want to prevent copycat criminals from taking place and other camps from being burned.
The Greeks even consider the German plan to be “dangerous”. Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, 52, said: “There is no doubt that Moria has been razed by some hyperactive refugees and migrants who want to force its immediate relocation from the island.”
Migration Minister Notis Mitarakis added (47) that migrants should be prevented from being forced to asylum in another country through a riot.
Men Arrested Again After Fire
Moria is not the only camp in Greece. Thousands of refugees also wait in Kos, Samos, Chios and Leros. The Greek government fears that desperate or radicalized residents could spark a conflagration.
So there was a fire on the edge of the logging field Tuesday night in Samos. The fire has already been extinguished. Police and firefighters have arrested several men. It was not revealed whether they were also refugees. They are investigating whether they were involved in arson, he said.
Chancellor Kurz warns
On Lesbos, brochures in seven languages inform migrants that they have no other way to leave the island than to obtain asylum. The asylum process can only be completed at the new Kara Tepe camp, which is currently under construction.
The discussion about the admission of immigrants provokes great resentment in Europe. Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz (34), for example, does not want to welcome migrants, but to take care of the integration of those who have already arrived. In short: “A situation like 2015 must never be repeated.”
