- Following the murder of a 29-year-old Portuguese in a kebab restaurant in Morges (VD) on Saturday night, the alleged perpetrator confessed his act.
- He is said to have acted for “revenge against Switzerland” and for the “Prophet Muhammad,” reports the Swiss French-speaking radio and television station RTS, citing sources familiar with the investigation.
- The victim is apparently a randomly selected person.
- He was released in July. The authorities singled him out for jihadist activities.
The man has been in the crosshairs of federal authorities since 2017. The Federal Intelligence Service (NDB) observed him, among other things, due to the consumption and distribution of jihadist propaganda.
Detained in custody in 2019
In April 2019, he was arrested in the canton of Vaud on suspicion of arson at a gas station in Prilly (VD) and taken into custody.
Investigators came across a possible jihadist background, which coincided with the FIS findings. The BA responsible for terrorist investigations took over the proceedings of the Vaudois prosecutor’s office in October 2019.
At the same time, the BA expanded the allegations of violations of the ban by Al-Qaeda and Islamic State groups, as well as prohibited depictions of violence.
Released in July
The mandatory measures court extended custody of the defendants at the request, first from the Vaudois prosecutor’s office and then from the BA. In July, the court released the man from pretrial detention at the request of the BA, subject to conditions. The BA based its application in particular on a psychiatric report. The conditions imposed included a ban on night outings, a ban on carrying weapons and an obligation to report.
Until the murder last Saturday, the defendant met all the conditions. Because this was the case, there was no reason to re-incarcerate, the BA wrote.
Known Islamist
Due to the homicide, the BA has now expanded its criminal proceedings to include intentional homicide and murder. They have not yet ruled out a terrorist motive. The BA clarifies the background in cooperation with the Vaud authorities, the Federal Police Office (Fedpol) and the FIS.
SRF’s investigation revealed that the accused was a known Islamist from the Lausanne metropolitan area. He is 26 years old and comes from a Turkish family. The suspect is said to be connected to various Islamists.
The alleged perpetrator stabbed a 29-year-old Portuguese at a kebab stand in Morges last Saturday. Canton Vaud police arrested him in Renens on Sunday.
