At least a small consolation for iPhone owners. While Apple boss Tim Cook only delighted watch and iPad fans with new devices at Apple’s event on Tuesday night, there was no news on the iPhone 12. After all, the new system iOS 14 operating is now available.
The file is approximately 5 gigabytes and can be updated in the phone menu -> General -> Software update. Free.
BLICK has tested the beta version in the last few months and can recommend the update. These are the 14 most important innovations.
1. Calls are no longer annoying in full screen mode
Telephoning has long been a minor problem on cell phones. WhatsApp chats and company are more important. Apple is now considering this development. When someone calls, it no longer completely locks the screen. The iPhone displays the name of the caller discreetly at the top.
2. Application library for a better overview
Apps that you don’t need regularly and don’t want on the home screen can now be banished to the app library. This gives you a better overview, and if worst comes to worst, the app is quickly at hand via the search function.
3. Color point for added security
New shows a small colored dot in the upper right screen, whether an app recently used the microphone (orange) or the camera (green).
4. The iPhone hears fire, water, ringing, etc.
If you are overly distracted or hearing impaired, you can tell iPhone to listen for ambient noise. Be it fire, doorbell or running tap water. When the iPhone detects the sound, it will display a text message.
5. Tag photos
Until now, you only had the option to organize your thousands of photos in different folders. Now you can leave a description below each image in the photo library. Just press the image and swipe up.
6. Touching starts the wish function
Hidden in the menu under “Settings / Accessibility / Handwriting”, you can now turn on “Tap on back”. Here you can define actions that will be carried out if you hit two or three times on the back of the iPhone. For example, that a screenshot is then taken or the music is louder. Unfortunately, you cannot start the camera with it. Also, the feature doesn’t seem to work on all models. But it is also possible to hit if you have a shell.
7. Translate even without an internet connection
Like Google, Apple has integrated its own translation app on Android devices. This can be translated in writing, but it also reacts to voice input and can initially speak eleven languages. Highlight: You can also download language files and then use the service without an internet connection.
8. Search emojis by keyword
Where can I find the money bag again? Or the fish on the hook? Until now, you had to scroll through the emojis to find the correct drawing. Now you can also easily search for emojis on the Apple keyboard. Type “Fish” and you can see the possible emojis, including the sushi symbols. And you can also play them multiple times in a row. Until now, it only showed emojis as a “word suggestion” if you typed a suitable term in the text field. Then the word was replaced with the emoji if necessary.
9. Smart scrolling widget
You can not only display individual widgets on the home screen and on all other pages, for example to play podcasts directly or to view calendar entries. No, there is also the so-called “smart stack”. Here the operating system tries to automatically anticipate what you are interested in. And you can scroll through various widgets.
10. Sleep tracking is also possible without an Apple Watch
Of course, sleep can be better controlled if you wear the Apple Watch with all sensors at night. The new sleep features also work with the iPhone. This can be found in the health app. You go in there not only when you normally get up, but also when you want to go to bed. If you want, you can also set the iPhone to remind you and even reduce the screen time at night. As a gentle reminder that he really should go to bed now.
11. The “Where is it?” Find more than iPhones
Through the application called “Where is it?” It can show your Apple devices from watch to iPhone on a map, if it has been activated. And lock it in case of theft. Now, other manufacturers can also integrate devices in this application. Apple guarantees data encryption. However, these devices still need cellular communications, WLAN or some other location function.
12. Chat faster and more fun with iMessage
Apple further updates the iMessage messenger. You can reply to incoming messages directly in a pop-up window. And countless new emojis are built in and can come to life. Of course, this all only makes sense if you are communicating with people who also have an iPhone.
13. Change the standards for mail and the Internet.
Until now, Safari was the browser used for Internet applications on the iPhone. And your own mail-to-mail program. Now you can adjust it yourself and set Chrome or Outlook as the default.
14. iOS 14 also comes to older iPhones
The presentation was still puzzling, now it’s clear: iOS 14 comes in the same iPhone models as iOS 13. This means that the 2015 iPhone 6S will also get an update, even if it’s five years under its belt in the fall. The first generation iPhone SE from 2016 is also supported, and of course all newer models.
