The first commercial test drives at the Ceneri Base Tunnel began on Monday. The tunnel through the first train at 6:04 am in Chiasso to the north went smoothly. The second train left at 7:10 am for Milan and got stuck due to a technical failure in the vehicle, SBB announced on its website.
The technical problem occurred coincidentally at the site and therefore independent of the tunnel structure, an SBB spokesperson said when asked by the Keystone-SDA news agency. The travelers arrived about two hours late.
The rescue train could not be towed
SBB Intervention employees wanted to get the stuck EuroCity out of the tunnel with the rescue and fire fighting train. But this was not possible because the brake system was blocked due to loss of air.
That’s why SBB Intervention employees evacuated about 150 travelers through a cross passage. A special train carried the evacuated passengers from the free metro to Bellinzona. There they could continue their journey. “SBB apologizes to the affected passengers,” it says. There was no impact on the rest of the passenger and cargo traffic. (szm / SDA)
