There was a tram accident in Basel shortly after 10:40 am today. The line 16 tram started from Thiersteinerallee towards the Thiersteinerallee / Dornacherstrasse junction. According to a witness, a delivery truck coming from Dornacherstrasse ignored the red light. Four people were injured, the passenger of the delivery van and three passengers of the trampoline.

The Basel-Stadt canton police are now investigating the history of the accident, according to their own information. The intersection must be closed for several hours for accident registration and assembly work.

This is likely the reason for the subsequent collision between the tram and the delivery van, Martin Schütz, a media spokesman for the Basel Department of Justice and Security (JSD), said at the scene. As a result, the tram derailed and also collided with three parked cars. According to JSD, the driver of the delivery truck is 21 years old. A quick alcohol test showed a value of 0.0 per thousand.

Due to the accident, several policemen, firefighters, two ambulances and two rescue services are at the scene. Two injured had to be taken to hospital. One was a passenger on the tram, the other was in one of the rammed cars. But there are no serious injuries.

Diverting lines 15 and 16

As announced by the BVB, the accident caused a blockage in the Heiliggeistkirche – Zwinglihaus area. Tram lines 15 and 16 will be diverted. Also, individual stops on line 36 are not currently available.

The length of the outage is not yet determined and there may be delays and deviations from the online schedule. The specialists work with the fire department to ensure that the tram in question can be put back on the rails.
