Sunday’s view: Mr. Ziegler, the Federal Council brings twenty unaccompanied minors to Switzerland. How do you find that?
Jean ziegler: I would like to say: this is a shame. But this is not how you can answer.
Why not?
We must rejoice with every child rescued from hell by Moriah. On the other hand, it is a shame that the second richest country in the world accepts only twenty of the thousands of unaccompanied refugee children from the Greek islands.
Why are the children alone in the camps?
They survived an attack on their home in their home country, were separated from their families while on the run, or were shipwrecked, and other family members have died.
How do children live now?
Children need safety, education and protection against sexual exploitation. All of these criteria are violated. They live in huge tents with 15 people and are often sexually harassed. They have no one to defend them. There is not school. The little ones play in the mud, the big ones stand by the wall and wait, wait, wait. If the desperation is too great, they stab her arms and legs with knives. Self-harm and suicide are the last cry for help from totally desperate children.
Emeritus professor of sociology Jean Ziegler (86) is one of the most famous critics of globalization. In May 2019 he visited the Moria refugee camp, the basis of his book “The Shame of Europe. On refugees and human rights ”. Ziegler is an advisor to the UN Human Rights Council.
Why is Europe looking the other way?
Not all EU leaders are hard-hearted people. But the displacement of the rubber boats with military force and the inhumane conditions on the islands are aimed at dissuading other people in need from fleeing. That is why European governments are holding back receptive cities as well. The refugee is seen as a danger, not as a person seeking help.
Should Moria be rebuilt?
We have always asked for Moria to be evacuated. In fact it happened because of the fire. Civil society must stand up now: refugees must collectively, everyone! – to the mainland. From there they are distributed to the 27 member states of the EU.
The Eastern European countries refuse.
These extreme racist governments could bounce back immediately. They are beggar states: some live almost exclusively on the EU Cohesion Fund. Switzerland also paid 1.3 billion Swiss francs, so that’s our business. And this money could be suspended.
Doesn’t it matter that the refugees set the camp on fire themselves?
Nobody knows where the spark came from. And it doesn’t matter if more than 12,000 people are homeless, without food, without water, without medical care!
