Iranian fighter Navid Afkari was executed on Saturday. According to the Ilna news agency, the 27-year-old Afkari was killed in the Adel-Abad prison in the southern Iranian city of Shiraz. The local judicial authority confirmed the execution, according to the report.
In protest of the death sentence previously there had been an international wave of solidarity. According to the Iranian judiciary, Afkari killed a security officer during a demonstration in Shiraz in 2018. He was said to have confessed to the incident. The athlete, his family and human rights organizations alleged that the confession was obtained through torture.
At the international level, Thomas Bach, president of the International Olympic Committee, and the president of the United States, Donald Trump, had protested against the death sentence.
