The new German ambassador to London, Andreas Michaelis, is an old friend of the UK and a reluctant diplomat. The dramatic tone Michaelis used on Twitter Thursday night revealed that the UK and the EU have entered a serious crisis. “In more than thirty years as a diplomat, I have never seen such a rapid, deliberate and severe disintegration of a negotiation,” Michaelis wrote. “Anyone who, like me, believes in a partnership between the EU and Britain cannot accept that.”
