At the beginning of August, the spectators of the first stage of the Tour of Poland gasped. In the final sprint at about 80 km / h, Fabio Jakobsen (24) collides with the barrier. The whole affair is not preceded by a driving error by the Dutchman, he is pushed aside by his compatriot Dylan Groenewegen (27) and can no longer avoid the horrific accident. Jakobsen suffers severe facial injuries and is rushed unconscious to the hospital. An emergency operation follows and two days in an artificial coma, meanwhile there is danger of death.
Groenewegen struggles with mental health issues
Groenewegen, who caused the accident, breaks his clavicle, but that is not the only wound he has to heal in the 27-year-old. With his punch, he becomes the most hated cyclist in the world in seconds. That does not leave him without a trace.
A few days after the accident, Groenewegen expressed himself in an emotional interview with the Dutch radio station “NOS”. That was clearly my mistake. I deviated from my line and you should not, ”he assumes the blame and emphasizes that it was never his intention to endanger other drivers. Despite his admission of guilt, a strong wind is still blowing against him.

On Tuesday, his coach Martijn Berkhout, who also cares for Fabio Jakobsen, will speak on the Tour de France talk show “Avondetappe” about the current health of his protégés. Groenewegen was not seriously injured but still suffers the consequences of the accident. And especially psychologically.
“We have not seen anything like it in cycling yet”
There are only losers here. Dylan has been and is being threatened on a daily basis through social media. We’ve never seen anything like this in cycling, ”says Berkhout. “It’s not that he feels good, he has to live with the consequences. He’s training right now, but not normally. ”Meanwhile, the two drivers have had contact, but Jakobsen is fully concentrating on his recovery.
Berkhout keeps a low profile on his prospects for a comeback. “Only time will tell if Jakobsen will return. We will have to wait and see if his body regenerates enough to become a competitive athlete and a top sprinter again. “
Both pilots have the support of their teams to process the consequences of the horrific accident. Support they may need due to their physical or emotional injuries. (bir)
