In the future, only the regions of neighboring countries will be included in the risk list. Cross-border travelers don’t have to be quarantined.
The situation: For weeks, the risk of corona infection has been increasing both in Switzerland and in neighboring countries. The Federal Council has long relied on quarantine rules for travelers from risk countries. You have now specified these rules for travelers from the neighboring countries of France, Germany, Italy, Austria and Liechtenstein.
Regions instead of countries: Of the neighboring countries, only the regions, but not the entire country, will be included in the risk list of the Federal Office of Public Health (BAG). This happens when the number of corona cases is above the limit of 60 new infections per 100,000 people, when reliable information is lacking, or when people who have been infected have repeatedly entered Switzerland from the regions. That is in a corresponding regulation.
Health Minister Alain Berset emphasized that a pragmatic solution had to be found in neighboring countries for economic and cultural exchange, but also for cross-border living spaces.
New to the list: Nine regions of mainland France can now be found on the federal quarantine list, including Paris and the Côte d’Azur. Also on the list are eight French overseas territories, the Austrian state of Vienna, the Czech Republic and the British Virgin Islands. The Canary Islands are also new. This means that now all of Spain is on the list. The updated list should apply as of Monday.

Cross-border travelers exception: Anyone entering Switzerland from foreign border regions should not have to be quarantined, even if the region has a large number of corona cases. Berset assured, however, that the Federal Council still has the option of introducing the obligation to quarantine people from the border regions. However, this only happens if an “access point” arises in a foreign country close to the border.
Exceptional Artists: The Federal Council decided on new exemptions from the quarantine obligation. Cultural workers returning after a cultural event, athletes after a competition and participants in specialized congresses do not have to be quarantined. The prerequisite is that a specific protection concept has been developed and implemented for the relevant event abroad.
Exception requirement: Also exempt from the quarantine obligation are people who have to travel to a risk area for professional or medical reasons and cannot be postponed. The prerequisite is that the stay abroad does not last more than five days and that a concept of protection is available.
Areas not close to the border: For returnees from countries or areas at risk not in the vicinity of Switzerland (such as Paris or Côte d ‘Azur), the following applies: Anyone entering Switzerland must be quarantined for ten days. No additional controls will be introduced at the border. “That would be unrealistic,” Berset clarified.
