On Wednesday night around 9:30 pm there was a fire in an orchard on Artelweg in Riehen. A barn where chickens and pigeons lived was affected. 38 pigeons and 9 chickens could not escape and were burned.

The rescuers were alerted by several people when the barn was already in full fire. Before that, various popping noises could be heard. The prosecutor attributes this to the explosion of the solar system batteries on the roof of the barn.
Nobody was hurt in the incident. When asked by Telebasel Thursday afternoon, Peter Gill, a spokesman for the Basel prosecutor’s office, said an arson would be ruled out. Rather, it is assumed that there was a technical defect that caused the fire.
