There is another fire in the port of Beirut. Just a few weeks after the devastating explosion in the Lebanese capital with nearly 200 deaths.
Live images showed flames and thick clouds of black smoke. A Civil Defense spokesman told the German press agency that a warehouse with oil and tires caught fire in the free port.
The cause of the fire was initially unclear. Initially, there was no information on possible victims either.
The fire brigade was on duty. The army used helicopters that dropped water from the air over the fire site. She asked people to leave the surrounding neighborhoods. Eyewitnesses said nearby people fled in panic. The workers ran off the boardwalk. SRF correspondent Pascal Weber recorded his impressions in a tweet.
More than 190 people died and more than 6,000 were injured in the August 4 disaster. Much of the port and its surroundings were completely destroyed. The explosion is said to have been triggered by large amounts of the highly explosive chemical ammonium nitrate that had been stored in the port for years.
