The Moria refugee camp on the Greek island of Lesbos no longer exists. A major fire on Wednesday night and another fire late last night completely destroyed the camp, which is considered a “slum on the edge of Europe.”
It is not known where homeless migrants will find refuge. Austria already ruled it out on Wednesday. The Netherlands does not want to host refugees either. The only thing that is clear on Thursday is that the dispute over the Moria refugees has flared up again in Europe.
Bern wants to host 20 refugees
Switzerland is also taking part in the debate. The Bern city council wants to offer up to 20 people from the burned refugee camp shelter, as it announced on Wednesday. For the president of the Greens Balthasar Glättli (48) that is not enough.
He is committed to ensuring that Switzerland accepts a large contingent of refugees. “Eight Swiss cities are ready to accept additional refugees from the Greek islands,” he writes on Twitter. Now the ball is in the Federal Council and the responsible authorities.
Juso’s demand: accept 13,000 refugees immediately
The Socialist Youth go one step further. The president of Juso, Ronja Jansen (25), calls for a “complete paradigm shift” in European and Swiss migration policy. The Juso has called a demonstration today Thursday.
And the Young Party makes clear demands on the Federal Council and Parliament. One of them says: “The immediate admission of 13,000 refugees from Greece, so that all residents of Moria can be evacuated immediately.” Media: The Juso want to bring all the migrants from the burning refugee camp of Moria to Switzerland.
