The Basel Carnival should take place in a crown-compatible way in 2021. Carnival people are considering doing without it altogether.

No crowds, no crowded bars, no large parades with roadside spectators – this is what the Basel Carnival should look like next year. After cancellation this spring, there will be a shortened version due to Corona in 2021.

On Monday evening, the Basel Carnival Committee briefed those in charge of the cliques about these plans, combined with the call that carnival people should now come up with their own ideas. For example, the movements could be moved to the rooms, was a suggestion of the committee.

The fact that street carnival organizers are now passing the ball to the cliques is being hotly debated on the Basel carnival scene. The announcement was not a total surprise, says Thomas Kissling, president of “Spezi-Clique.” But: “I don’t necessarily have to have a mid-carnival night with numerous conditions,” says Kissling.

One could certainly imagine a district carnival, but it is questionable if that works without large crowds. It is important to organize something for the children who are looking forward to the three days of carnival throughout the year.

Andy Kurz, president of United Kleinbasel VKB, sees it in a similar light. Kurz also emphasizes that it is difficult to develop ideas now, although it is not yet known how the situation of the crown will be presented next February.

“I don’t understand why you can’t do without the carnival”

The comments made by users on srf.ch about the article on the Basel Carnival Committee plans are different. “I do not understand why you cannot do without Carnival for 2 or 3 years until there are effective vaccines and drugs,” writes Hans Meuri, for example.

User Tamara Binggeli responds that with such an exemption, Carnival will likely disappear as a cultural asset. “No carnival is an alternative,” Peti Federer, spokesman for the Lucerne Carnival Committee (LFK), told Radio SRF yesterday.

The people of the Basel Carnival have until the end of September to present their ideas to the Carnival Committee. Then it will show what Carnival 2021 could look like. Many people at carnival are likely to decide only if they feel like whistling, drumming or making noise in these circumstances, or if they prefer to go on a skiing vacation.

Frauenfeld: a virtue out of necessity

The organizers of the Frauenfeld carnival, the Murganese, want to turn necessity into a virtue. A mask requirement is planned to apply to the two parades through the canton capital of Thurgau. When asked by Radio SRF, Murganese spokesman Hans Brunner said: “In the past we once had a bond as our motto and we were able to easily adapt this concept. Then the participants and visitors to the parade could wear original masks and be protected. The people at the Frauenfeld carnival do not consider planned indoor events, such as carnival entertainment in a large event hall, realistic.
