Fans threaten linesman: Djokovic intervenes personally
It happened as it should: shortly after Novak Djokovic was disqualified from the US Open for hitting a linesman with a ball that was knocked over in frustration, a Serbian tabloid posted the woman’s Instagram account. In a very short time, the American’s posts were flooded with hateful messages from Djokovic’s fans.
Among the images of the woman with bottles of wine, there were comments such as: ‘You can drink gallons of alcohol, but can’t you survive being hit by a tennis ball? Bad actress! You should be ashamed of yourself. ”The comment column was also flooded with Serbian flags.
Even more extreme are the comments in the images in which the linesman remembers his son, who died in a motorcycle accident twelve years ago. You could see jubilation and threats like, “Don’t worry, you’ll be with him soon.”
It took on such extreme proportions that Novak Djokovic himself got involved. In a statement on social media, he wrote:
«Dear #NoleFam,
Thanks for the positive messages you sent me. Please remember that the linesman who was hit also needs the support of our community. She did nothing wrong. I ask that you be especially empathetic to her at this time. We grow from these moments. “
Djokovic was disqualified at the US Open because he hit a ball in frustration after missing a serve and hit a linesman in the throat. The Serbian then skipped the mandatory press conference and announced via Instagram that he was feeling sad and empty. (abu)
