In Italy, a murderer sentenced to life imprisonment has escaped from prison for the third time. Giuseppe Mastini, 60, known as “Johnny the Gypsy”, used a free passage to escape from his maximum security prison in Sardinia. The ES Polizia police union announced on Monday that the police are hunting the criminal.
Originally from Bergamo, northern Italy, Mastini moved with his family to Rome in the 1970s and committed his first murder at the age of eleven, Italian news agency Ansa reported. Mastini first escaped from prison in 1987 when he failed to show up after being released.
At the time, he was a fugitive for two years until the police detained him again. During this time he committed robberies, killed a policeman, wounded another and took a young woman hostage. In June 2017, he escaped from a prison in northern Italy using the same method. (SDA)
