Frenchman Pierre Gasly wins the chaotic, twice neutralized and now interrupted Italian Grand Prix.
Even behind Gasly in AlphaTauri there was an unexpected order in the rankings. Spaniard Carlos Sainz at McLaren and Canadian Lance Stroll at Racing Point finished second and third, respectively.
The first phase of the safety car, triggered by Kevin Magnussen, who had stopped in Haas’s car, changed from a race that was on the expected path to a completely insane race.
The caution induced Lewis Hamilton, who was clearly the leader at the time, like Antonio Giovinazzi in the Alfa Romeo, to make an illegal pit stop, which resulted in a heavy penalty. The Briton and the Italian had to take the detour into the pit lane and stand still for ten seconds in front of their garage. Therefore, Hamilton had to be modest with seventh place. His teammate Valtteri Bottas took fifth place.
Max Verstappen at Red Bull retired, as did the two Ferrari drivers Sebastian Vettel and Charles Leclerc. Kimi Raikkonen lost the points again despite the chaos. The Finn finished thirteenth, Giovinazzi sixteenth.
