- In the US state of California, the situation has worsened three weeks after numerous wildfires broke out.
- According to media reports, around 1,000 people have been isolated from the environment in a camp in a Sierra Nevada national park east of San Francisco since Saturday.
- The only access road is not passable due to a fire.
- Therefore, fire forces and rescue planes are trying to access the area.
Six people with burns were taken to a hospital during the fires in the region, as reported by “The Fresno Bee.” 65 people received treatment at the Fresno Yosemite airport.
Campers threatened by the flames are instructed to save themselves in an emergency in the water of the Mammoth Pool Reservoir, “The Fresno Bee” reported, citing a spokesman for the national park. According to CNN, the fire in the Sierra National Forest south of Yosemite National Park broke out Friday night and reached nearly 15,000 hectares by Saturday night.
Across California, according to a fire department situation report Saturday, nearly 12,500 rescue workers were recently busy containing 22 major fires. More than 900 fires were said to have broken out since the lightning strikes that started the first fires in mid-August.
A good 6,000 square kilometers of land has been burned. That is more than twice the area of Luxembourg. So far at least eight people have died. Almost 3,300 buildings were reported to have been destroyed. More than 10,500 people are still unable to return to their houses and apartments. The two largest fires recently occurred near the metropolis of San Francisco.
The fire department asked residents of affected regions in the state to spend as little time outdoors as possible due to rising temperatures this long holiday weekend. New fires could easily break out in current weather conditions. Labor Day, a commemorative day for the labor movement, is celebrated in the United States on Monday.
