At the beginning of the year there was a shortage of butter in Switzerland. That is why cooking butter has been coming from the EU since July.
Industrial organization Butter raised the alarm in March. Less butter has been produced for a few months. This is because most of the milk is processed into fresh dairy products and cheese. The closing of spring made it even worse: “People were cooking more at home and it was not possible to buy abroad either,” Peter Ryser told SRF’s consumer magazine “Espresso.” That is why milk and cheese were in great demand.
Favorite butter always made with Swiss milk
Since farmers get more money for these products, there is not enough milk left for butter production, Ryser says. As a result, producers have had to import butter from the EU since July. However, this only applies to cooking butter in silver-green packaging. Favorite butter, organic butter and other butter specialties will continue to be made with Swiss milk.
Peter Ryser from the butter industry organization expects the cooking butter to be made from 100% Swiss milk again in November.
By the way, according to wholesalers Coop and Migros, cooked butter from the EU is a bit cheaper than that from Switzerland.
