On Wednesday, shortly after 11 p.m., a resident of an apartment building on Florastrasse in Grenchen discovered smoke in another apartment in the building. The fire department, alerted immediately, discovered the seriously injured resident inside the apartment and was able to rescue her from the accommodation. The ambulance took her to a hospital. The woman died there, as the Solothurn canton police announced on Friday.

The old woman’s two cats died in the apartment. The apartment was badly damaged by fire and smoke. Residents of the multi-story building were evacuated as a precaution during the operation. The cause of the fire was initially unclear on Thursday.

Investigations into the cause of the fire by specialists from the Solothurn cantonal police have now shown that the fire can be traced back to a technical defect in an electrical device in the deceased’s apartment. This subsequently led to a smoldering fire with dense smoke development.
