- Wout van Aert wins the seventh stage of the Tour de France.
- The Belgian prevails in the sprint.
- Adam Yates defends the “Maillot Jaune”.
After the fifth stage, Wout van Aert also won the seventh stage of the Tour de France. The 25-year-old Belgian won the 168km stage from Millau to Lavaur in southern France in a smaller leading group sprint ahead of Norway’s Edvald Boasson Hagen and Frenchman Bryan Coquard.
Sagan new in green
Before heading out to the Pyrenees for the weekend, the riders barely had a chance to breathe on the rolling terrain. Already on the first of 3 smaller climbs, Peter Sagan’s Bora-Hansgrohe team created a turning point that helped the Slovakian put on the green jersey. Sam Bennett, the previous bearer of the jersey with the most points, lost the connection, as did many other sprint specialists.
There were more divisions in the last quarter shot of the stage. Tour leader Adam Yates remained in the first group and successfully defended the yellow jersey. The new third is the French Guillaume Martin instead of Tadej Pogacar. The white jersey has a new wearer: Egan Bernal. The winner of the previous year was eighth.
Küng best Swiss
The Swiss were not among the main characters in the seventh section, but Stefan Küng reached the destination northwest of Toulouse at the same time as Van Aert. Thurgau was on top several times on the windy final leg, and was ultimately ranked 41st.
Sébastien Reichenbach crossed the finish line in 74th place, Marc Hirschi was 131st and Michael Schär was 149th.
So it goes
The two stages of the Pyrenees are scheduled for the weekend. First, the 141 km stage from Cazères-sur-Garonne to Loudenvielle over two mountains of the first and a climb of the highest category. A day later there are five more mountain classifications waiting on the section from Pau to Laruns.
