Demonstrations in 18 cities: first national climate strike since the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic
For the first time since the start of the Covid 19 pandemic, the climate strike movement took to the streets again on Friday afternoon. The demonstrations took place in 18 Swiss cities. The movement feels abandoned by politics.
The climate strike organization said beforehand that people had “a legitimate interest in having a future on a livable planet.” But that was not heard. “In politics we were insulted and ridiculed by the right wing, used and deceived by the parties of the left,” said a statement.
After the demonstrations on Friday, acts of massive and non-violent civil disobedience followed in late September. With this, the climate strikers want to “finally be taken seriously.” For this, the various climate movements such as Collective Climate Justice, Extinction Rebellion, Climatestrike and Collectif Break Free worked together for the first time.
More than 1000 people in Zurich
In Zurich, more than 1000 people participated in an approved rally from Helvetiaplatz through Limmatquai to the city hall complex. In Uster, in the canton of Zurich, around 100 people went on strike for the climate.
In addition to the usual demand for climate protection measures, such as a rapid reduction in CO2 emissions, Zurich also asked people to participate in the national action week in Bern, which will take place from 20 to 25 September. At the same time, the last week of the fall session of the National Council and the Council of States takes place in the federal city.
Around 500 people participated in the Basel rally. The mostly young protesters marched peacefully, wearing protective masks and chanting slogans loudly, from Münsterplatz to Messeplatz. The demo was approved.
Once again, the call was followed mainly by schoolchildren who met at the Münsterplatz at 2:00 p.m. “I am sad and angry that the powerful of the world are not doing anything about the climate crisis,” said an activist in the opening speech of the demonstration.
“Night trains instead of cheap flights”
Around 600 people, from young to old, took to the streets on Friday afternoon in Bern for a sustainable and climate-friendly future. Most of them wore a protective mask. The posters had the same demands as before the corona pandemic: “Night trains instead of cheap flights” and “Protecting the climate makes children happy as well as adults.”
In Lausanne, the climate demonstration mobilized around 800, mainly young people. The protesters gathered at the train station at 2 pm and then marched peacefully into the city center. They chanted shouts like: “We are hotter, hotter, hotter than the weather.” Almost all the participants wore a mask, as demanded by the organizers because of the coronavirus.
Around 600 people demonstrated in Geneva. They moved from Cornavin train station over the Mont Blanc bridge to the Plainpalais district. (sda)
