The protests in Kenosha, some of which were accompanied by riots, were sparked by seven shots in the back of a black American during a police raid. Jacob Blake, a 29-year-old family man, survived seriously injured.
Blake is paralyzed from the waist down after being shot in the spine. A video from a witness showed Blake walking around a car during the police operation as two policemen followed him with guns in hand. One of them points to his back. After Blake opens the driver’s door and leans in, one of the cops can be seen grabbing his shirt and shooting seven times.
A knife was found on the floor of the driver’s side of the car, according to the Wisconsin State Attorney General’s office investigating the case. Investigators have so far provided no further information on whether the knife played a role in the event. Police had previously tried to stun Blake with a stun gun, but failed, he said.
Attorney General William Barr said in a television interview Wednesday, without elaborating, that Blake was about to commit a crime and was armed. There is no gun in his hand in the video as long as he can be seen.
