Top 10 Players
- Serena Williams (United States / WTA 8) – Margarita Gasparyan (RUS / WTA 117) 6: 2, 6: 4
- Sofia Kenin (United States / WTA 4) – Leylah Fernandez (CAN / WTA 104) 6: 4, 6: 3
Very easy in the 1st set, in the 2nd round it was hard work for Serena Williams. Her opponent Margarita Gasparyan could not find a recipe at first and had to be dominated by the hard blows of the American.
The second set initially seemed to be a picture of the first: Williams brought his opponent’s serve to 3-1. Gasparyan was not impressed and immediately leaned back. A closed game developed at a high level, in which in the end the most experienced won, on paper the best player. “I’m glad I finished,” Williams said after the game, “Gasparyan came back very well.”
Williams and Stephens in the duel of champions
Williams’ third-round opponent becomes his compatriot Sloane stephens (WTA 39). The American defeated Olga Goworzowa (BLR / WTA 130) without a problem 6: 2, 6: 2. This leads to a duel between two former US Open winners: Williams has triumphed at Flushing Meadows 6 times (most recently in 2014 ), Stephens was successful in 2017.
An early break per set made the difference between Sofia Kenin (WTA 4) and challenger Leylah Fernandez, 17. The Australian Open winner took the young Canadian’s serve in her second service game.
Fernández, who was ranked 104th in the WTA rankings, defended herself as best she could. She struck very well and had a precise length in her strokes, but she couldn’t shake the power relationships. At the end of the total 80 minutes of competition, things suddenly happened quickly. Kenin made another break to the final score of 6: 4, 6: 3 and held up well in the tournament. Next up is Tunisian Ons Jabeur (WTA 31).
Sabalenka and Konta already out
The one placed in position 5 Aryna sabalenka (WTA 11) you have to pack. Against her Belarusian compatriot Victoria Azarenka (WTA 27) she clearly lost 1: 6, 3: 6. Azarenka is in great shape, having won the Cincinnati tournament. By the way, Sabalenka defeated Azarenka in round 1 of the US Open last year.
Also for seed number 9 Johanna konta (WTA 13) meant the end of the second round. The British failed against Romanian Sorana Cirstea (WTA 77) with 6: 2, 6: 7 (5: 7), 4: 6. It all started according to Konta’s taste: in the first service game, Cirstea gave her a break with two double errors in a row. Konta secured the first set and broke her opponent again in the second set.
But Cirstea immediately got back to 2-2, stayed in the game and won a close tie-break. The third set was also contested and finally fell on the Romanian side.
