yesErlin Airport, Hamburg Elbe Philharmonic, Stuttgart 21: Large public projects in Germany are regularly transformed into multi-billion dollar graves. Anyone who thinks that it is an immovable law of nature that the costs of such projects multiply should take a look at Switzerland. This Friday the Swiss will open the Ceneri Base Tunnel. With this 15-kilometer-long railway tube in the canton of Ticino, they complete the “New Transversal Railroad” (NEAT). Its heart is the Gotthard Base Tunnel, which was inaugurated four years ago.

NEAT is the largest construction project in Swiss history. By the time it is finally completed this year, this work of the century will have cost 23 billion francs (21.4 billion euros). This is a precision landing compared to planning, even if you had to adjust in the meantime due to changes to the route.
