Drama on the high seas! There is no trace of the Gulf Livestock 1 freighter after it was caught in Typhoon Maysak. The last contact was near Japan. One last emergency call. About 185 kilometers west of the island of Amami-Oshima.
There were 43 crew members and around 5,800 head of cattle on board the mega-ship. One member of the crew, a Filipino (45), was able to pull the Japanese coast guard out of the water. He was floating in the East China Sea with a life jacket. The man was transferred to a hospital on Amami-Oshima Island. There is still no trace of his 42 colleagues: 38 Filipinos, two Australians and two New Zealanders.
Typhoon makes rescue difficult
According to the rescued Filipino, the freighter capsized and sank after an engine failed in the strong waves. Initially there was no official confirmation of this. According to the man’s report, all members of the crew had been asked to wear life jackets. The 45-year-old jumped into the water, but did not see any of his colleagues before the coast guard found him.
Heavy rains and winds from Typhoon Maysak hampered the search for the missing, according to authorities. The cargo ship sailing under the Panamanian flag left New Zealand for China in mid-August, where it was supposed to arrive on Friday. (SDA / jmh)
