Today ends the registration period for candidatures. Cédric Wermuth and Mattea Meyer face no known competition.

Two months ago there was still some concern. A group of 24 SP MPs had expressed concern in a letter about the diversity of opinions within the party if the clearly left-wing Meyer / Wermuth duo could assume the presidency without a known opponent.

“Constructive talks”

But no one from this group will definitively run for the presidium, confirms the SP’s national advisor, Flavia Wasserfallen, who helped initiate the letter. “We met with Cédric Wermuth and Mattea Meyer twice and had very good and constructive discussions with them,” he explains.

Mattea Meyer and Cédric Wermuth took the concerns of the group very seriously, which, in addition to Wasserfallen, also includes Matthias Aebischer, Daniel Jositsch, Yvonne Feri and numerous people from western Switzerland. We want to work together with Meyer and Wermuth so that the SP is a party with an open culture of debate, in which there is also room for different opinions, emphasizes Wasserfallen.

An unlikely opponent

For this reason, the group that wrote the critical letter in the summer has decided not to appear against him at the next party congress. But it has different demands. “It was important to us from the beginning that we didn’t just want to put together a catalog of requirements,” says Wasserfallen.

“On the contrary, we see it as our responsibility to cooperate. This resulted in our group submitting a candidacy for Vice President in order to specify the development and implementation of these project ideas. “Specifically, Vaudois National Advisor and Economist Samuel Bendahan wants to become Vice President of the SP and contribute the group ideas.

But that also means that the only rival for the Wermuth / Meyer co-presidium is the young and relatively unknown Social Democrat Martin Schwab de Biel, who will have absolutely no chance. The SP Presidium will be elected at the party conference in mid-October.
