In the case of the critic of the Russian government Alexej Navalny (44), who is being treated in Germany, according to the Federal Government, “unequivocal evidence” of a chemical nerve agent of the Novitschok group was provided. Government spokesman Steffen Seibert said Wednesday in Berlin.
“It is a shocking fact that Alexei Navalny was the victim of an attack with a nerve chemical agent in Russia,” the statement said. “The federal government condemns this attack in the strongest possible terms.”
Germany will now “discuss an appropriate joint reaction” with the European Union and NATO, it continues. Now the Russian government is “urgently requested to comment on the matter.”
The Foreign Ministry has called the Russian ambassador. “Once again the federal government’s request to fully and transparently clarify the background of this now proven poisoning of Alexej Navalny was unequivocally sent to him,” said Foreign Minister Heiko Maas (53). The Federal Government will also be in contact with the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW).
Navalny has been treated at the Berlin Charité since August 22.
Novichok in England too
In March 2018, former Russian spy Sergej Skripal (69) and his daughter Julia (36) were poisoned with the same poison in Salisbury, England. The two had been found unconscious on a park bench. They survived.
Investigating authorities assumed that the poisoning likely took place at Skripal’s home, as the highest concentration of poison was measured at the front door. According to Scotland Yard’s assessment, the poison could have been applied to the door handle as a sticky substance and thus reached the hands of the victims, from where the poison was transported to the places subsequently visited.
Woman died of poison
On June 30, 2018, an incident occurred in the nearby town of Amesbury in Salisbury. A British couple, aged 44 and 45, came into contact with a substance identified as Novichok by the British army. First, the ambulance was called when the woman collapsed in her apartment with foam at the mouth, and the man soon followed her. They had been to Salisbury the day before. Both were treated for life-threatening poisoning at the hospital, from which the woman died on July 8, 2018.
London accused Moscow of being the mastermind behind the attack on the Skripals. Tensions arose between the two countries and London expelled the Russian diplomats. War agent Novichok was developed in the former Soviet Union.
Navalny, who fell suddenly into a coma on 20 August on a flight from his home country and was initially examined in Omsk, is being treated at the Charité at the urging of his family. After evaluating the clinical findings, the German doctors assumed that Navalny had been poisoned. The Russian government had described the Berlin Charité’s assessment that Navalny was probably poisoned as an eruption. (girlfriend / bra)
