CEO Urs Kessler is the first Junfraubahnen boss to master such a major crisis. In the interview, he says if the strategy of replacing the missing foreign guests with Swiss has worked.
SRF News: Generally, most of the guests are from abroad. Now they were forced to depend on the Swiss. Did as many as you expected come?
Urs Kessler: We were very happy with the months of July and August. We would like to thank the Swiss. 153,000 guests visited us, almost 95 percent of them from Switzerland. Many have rediscovered the Jungfraujoch, that is important to us.
Many were now in the yoke and will probably not return soon. Also, a trip there is very expensive.
Prices are a disservice. Thanks to the cooperation with various partners, we are able to offer trips at good prices. A trip to the Jungfraujoch is as expensive as a one-day ski pass. The new V-Bahn offers us an opportunity. Many have already been in the yoke, but a visit with the new cable car is possible from December, a completely new experience. This will undoubtedly encourage many people to visit the yoke again.
How do you see the future, especially regarding foreign guests who are unlikely to return anytime soon?
This year we mark as an “epidemic year”, a year to forget. Next year will be a year of transition. We will see normalization in 2022. We need foreign guests, that is perfectly clear.
