An identity check was intensified in the middle of Freie Strasse. Eight police officers detained a 19-year-old on May 24, 2019. The Basel bidder with Colombian roots was on a skateboard, which is not allowed in the pedestrian zone. As reported by “20 Minuten”, the 19-year-old wanted to light a cigarette after showing his ID.
A policeman wanted to forbid him to do this and took the cigarette out of his mouth. The young man was then verbally abusive. The police overcame him and knocked him to the ground, put him in a saliva-guarded van and took him to the police station, where he finally had to spend the night.
“I’ve been checked many times, but I have never seen anything like it,” the Basel bidder told the newspaper.
Ongoing proceedings against police officers
The 19-year-old was able to successfully challenge the following sanction order for violence and threats against officials. The Basel criminal court acquitted him in August. But for preventing an official act, he was sentenced to a conditional fine.
According to the police report on the incident, “no personal information is known or can be provided.” This despite the fact that the street was very busy at the time of the inspection, on a Friday afternoon, according to “20 Minuten”. The criminal court had used a sound recording of an eyewitness in the process, which the newspaper had published.
Following the acquittal of the Basel bidder, an investigation is under way against the eight police officers involved. There is a complaint: for assault, assault and sexual harassment. As this is an “ongoing procedure”, the Basel prosecution does not provide further information on the facts.
