During a police check in the Californian metropolis of Los Angeles, an officer shot a black cyclist carrying a pistol. After the man was taken into custody for an inspection, he struck one of the officers in the face, the Los Angeles sheriff’s office said. The man then dropped a bundle of clothing on which a “black semi-automatic pistol could be seen,” spokesman Brandon Dean told the media.
Then an officer fired several shots. The cyclist was pronounced dead Monday at the scene of the incident.
Witnesses criticize the procedure
Eyewitnesses to the incident report that the police reacted disproportionately. “You didn’t have to shoot him more than five times. You could have shot him once in the leg, ”a witness to the incident told CBS Los Angeles.
The victim is Dijon Kizzee, 29 years old. The man was arrested for violating a traffic regulation. The incident is now under investigation, police say.
According to local media reports, there have been isolated protests against police violence over the violent death of Kizzee.
Repeated incidents fuel debate
Since the assassination of unarmed African American George Floyd in a brutal police operation in the city of Minneapolis in late May, a debate has developed about racism and police violence in the United States, repeatedly leading to protests. In addition, there have been repeated incidents that heat up the spirits: just about ten days ago the police shot several times in the back the black Jacob Blake in the city of Kenosha in the state of Wisconsin. The man survived seriously injured. (SDA / noo)
